Noblegen was a solid state optical nanopore DNA sequencing approach. They’re long since dead, but came up in a conversation about Genopore (which I posted about recently). The point being that optical nanopore approaches have been tried several times. With limited success.
Noblegen also appear to have been incorporating a “expandomer”-like approach as proposed by Lingvitae and Stratos (now Roche). Here every base is replaced with multiple bases to make the detection process easier… though to my knowledge no-one has shown any very compelling data on these approaches to date.
