On Long Reads...

Today I was talking to some folks about sequencing and long reads again. This is always a difficult balance between two seemingly conflicting points of view:

  • Long reads are of fundamental importance to humanity. They are awesome.

  • I don’t see much reason for significant short term growth.

Some of the nuance around these statements is important to understand my position.

Particularly the “I don’t see” part. This means that most of the arguments present (e.g. by Oxford Nanopore). Don’t convince me. That doesn’t mean these arguments couldn’t be structured in a way that would convince me. It also doesn’t mean that there are not other arguments that might convince me.

You are welcome to reach out on the Discord if you want to try and convince me!

Where Are We?

We have two companies that have spent billions developing long read sequencing technologies.
