Solid State Nanopores - Cambridge Nucleomics!

There’s a solid state nanopore company I’d not heard of, and they’ve recently raised $736K!

Cambridge Nucleomics is based in Cambridge (the British one), and they seem to have been around since 2021, but completed their seed this month.

Nucleomics appear to be focused on counting applications:

So hybridize a barcode with big bulky loops to an RNA target (no reason it couldn’t be DNA I imagine). And stick it through a pore. I assume you can vary the distance between the loops1 to create different labels.

The approach reminds me of Ulrich Keyser’s nano-pipette based data storage work.

Which makes sense because he’s the scientific founder!

The company lists three potential applications:

  • Point-of-care Sepsis

  • Early stage cancer detection

  • MRD

I met Ulrich once, I thought he was awesome and his lab was awesome!

I have some thoughts!
